Overview

Shopping From Your Community, Made Easy

Maami is a platform that makes it easy to shop from nearby vendors. Users can discover and order local goods and essentials from trusted sellers in their community, bringing simple digital convenience to everyday shopping.

The Problem

Local Vendors are Invisible Online

Most local merchants in Nigeria operate offline, so their products are invisible to digital shoppers. Buyers often have to visit markets or rely on unreliable delivery. Maami was created to bridge this gap by bringing local vendors online in a simple, natural way.

The Goal

Building a Platform That Works for Both Sides

The goal was to design a platform to support both merchants and buyers. Vendors gain visibility and can manage their products and orders. Buyers can browse, order, and track deliveries from nearby sellers. The experience should focus on trust, clear communication, and a strong community feel.

The Research

Designing Around Real Market Behaviour

We mapped user flows for both vendors and buyers based on real market habits. Vendors got simple paths for managing stock, tracking orders, and handling deliveries, designed to match how they already run their shops. Buyers got an easy browsing and checkout experience with clear navigation and reliable delivery updates. The goal was to make the app feel natural to use, not something people had to learn.

Design Solution

Simplifying E-commerce for Both Vendors and Shoppers

I designed an end-to-end mobile app that allowed users to browse product categories, view vendor profiles, add items to cart, and request x-day delivery. I prioritized simplicity and clarity in every flow from search to checkout. Vendors could easily upload their items using guided forms, and customers were guided through familiar interactions like tap-to-call, map previews, and saved delivery addresses. I also built reusable components for cards, product pages, and payment confirmation to ensure scalability as the platform grew.

Customer's Onboarding

Maami’s onboarding is simple and welcoming. Users get in quickly, and location access is requested upfront so the app can immediately show nearby vendors and shops. The goal is to make the experience feel local from the start.

Customer Shop and Search

Maami makes shopping easy. Users can browse, filter, or search for items quickly, with results updating instantly. The flow stays simple and familiar so anyone can find what they need without feeling overwhelmed.

Product Details and Cart

Maami keeps product browsing simple. Users can view item details at a glance, add to cart instantly, and manage their cart with ease. Items are grouped by vendor, totals update in real time, and confirmations prevent accidental actions.

Order Tracking

After checkout, users stay informed with clear order statuses, detailed breakdowns, and live delivery tracking. They can see everything at a glance, contact the rider if needed, and reorder items easily.

Vendor Onboarding

Vendors onboard through a simple flow that verifies their identity, confirms their location, and sets up their store. After a quick phone number check and basic business details, the shop is created instantly so sellers can start adding products without stress.

Vendor Dashboard

The vendor dashboard or home screen gives sellers a clear view of their store activity. They can check orders, track earnings, manage inventory, and handle deliveries from one simple screen. Everything updates in real time, making daily operations easier to manage.

Adding Inventory

Vendors can add products quickly using simple inputs, sliders, and dropdowns. They enter the basics, upload images, set variants, and review everything on a clean confirmation screen. The guidance in every step was intentional, so even first-time digital sellers can add items without stress.

Vendor Delivery Management

Maami gives vendors a real-time view of all deliveries. They can see active and past drop-offs, check rider details, and follow up with customers from one clean screen. It keeps delivery management simple and organised.

Rider Management

Maami gives vendors a simple way to manage their riders. They can add new riders, view profiles, track completed deliveries, and contact them instantly. It keeps delivery operations organised and easy to manage.

Impacts and results

Reducing Friction for Buyers and Local Vendors

Maami isn’t live yet, but the design already shows where the product is headed. It removes the friction between buyers and local vendors. Buyers can find nearby products easily, and vendors can manage their shop without extra tools. Even before launch, the prototypes helped communicate the product’s value to early users and investors.

What I learnt

Designing for Two Very Different Users

Working on Maami showed how different the needs of buyers and vendors can be inside the same product. Also, simple things like clear patterns, fewer decisions, and consistent feedback helped both sides feel confident using the product.
